VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: RESEARCH ASSISTANT

The Montana Human Rights Network is a membership-based, progressive advocacy organization working on human rights issues in Montana.  Specifically, the Network focuses on challenging the right-wing from the hardcore white supremacist movement to more politically mainstream groups commonly referred to as the Religious Right and the “wise use” movement.  The position is full-time from January-April 2007, with the likelihood of continued full-time or part-time employment after April.

Duties:

Opposition research is a driving force behind the Network’s work.  The Research Assistant works with the Research Director to keep research materials current and easily retrievable.  The Research Assistant maintains the Network’s research databases and helps publish its regular publications and special reports.  The position also involves attending and reporting on meetings and legislative hearings that are of interest to the Network.  The Research Assistant keeps other staff members up to date on information they need to know for their work in Montana communities.  The position also helps fill requests from journalists and community members who are seeking research information.  The Research Assistant will also work with volunteers to teach them how to do research in local communities.    

Compensation:

Salary:  $11.00/hour

Seeking a Lobbyist

The Montana Human Rights Network is looking for a lobbyist for the 2007 legislative session.

  • Generally carry out the lobbying function of MHRN, including developing strategies to raise   the profile of MHRN, and to increase its legitimacy and authority as a voice for human rights in Montana.
  • Execute a pro-active legislative agenda (attached), making sure bills are introduced, providing testimony at committee hearings, preparing and distributing fact sheets for legislators, talking with legislators about their position and questions on the bill, preparing supportive legislators to make good arguments favoring the bill, working with allies to orchestrate effective committee hearings, and generating press attention to the bills.
  • Execute a reactive legislative strategy based on the pro-democracy positions taken by MHRN over the years, including identifying and tracking bills of concern, organizing testimony against offending bills, and providing fact sheets to legislators and answering questions about the bill.
  • Keep MHRN staff and progressive allies informed and involved in legislative work, specifically, maintaining close contact with MHRN’s interim director and the executive director of PRIDE, informing them of upcoming hearings, newly developing strategies, need for grassroots participation, and media opportunities.
  • Write newsletter articles and periodic updates to communicate with MHRN’s constituents as requested by MHRN’s interim director.
  • Work with allies and staff to plan a legislative lobby day on January 17.
  • Generate press attention to human rights issues and bills during the session.

ALTACARE JOB DESCRIPTION

FACILITY: Altacare
PROGRAM: Comprehensive School and Community Treatment
POSITION TITLE: Therapist (In-training practitioner)
REVISION DATE: 08/2006

POSITION SUMMARY
Direct therapeutic activities, individual, family and group therapy. Plans, implements and directs treatment, supervises MHA as well as the school based sites in which the program is assigned on an ongoing basis.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Social work or related counseling field from as accredited Master’s program. Currently eligible for supervision leading to LCSW, LPC or LCPC in Montana. Must have good recommendation and satisfactory work record from previous employer. A minimum of two (2) years experience in the area of child and/or adolescent mental health is preferred, along with a thorough knowledge of seriously emotionally disturbed youth. A thorough understanding of intervention techniques in working with children and families as well as regulatory requirements and Montana laws regarding working with SED youth. A basic knowledge of educational, psychological and social work systems as related to special education and the school environment. Must have knowledge of behavioral contingency management.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Exhibit professionalism in dress, demeanor and behavior at all times.
  2. Improve skills and knowledge by meeting or exceeding self-set professional goals.
  3. Coordinates and participates in the formulation and implementation of treatment plans, which includes discharge planning with agency contacts. Attends and participates in treatment team meetings, committees and professional meeting to present and assist in developing a comprehensive multidisciplinary program and ongoing review of treatment.
  4. Provides group therapy, individual and family therapy, oversees the implementation of psycho educational groups and behavioral interventions and works in partnership with MHA to ensure that all treatment interventions are implemented as dictated by the Master Treatment Plan.
  5. Demonstrates leadership in assuring integrity of Altacare Programs, oversees all aspects of program and assists in peer review assuring Quality Assurance.
  6. Must consistently demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain good public relations with families, referral agencies and other community resources through appropriate organizational, written, and verbal skills.
  7. Consistently exercise good judgment and adequate emotional stability in evaluating situation and making decisions despite the pressure of deadlines or the occurrence of unexpected stressful events.
  8. Effectively documents treatment and aftercare planning and clients’ progress. Completes necessary reports and assessments in timely manner.
  9. Demonstrates good time management skills, completes all required clinical documentation using approved format in a timely and professional manner.
  10. Will develop assessments of clients using appropriate developmental theories. This assessment process will inherently involve the family or guardian.
  11. Will meet at a minimum monthly with school designee to review and update students’ progress.
  12. Attendance will adhere to state licensing requirements, the expectations of the school in which the program resides and the needs of the program.
  13. Will maintain schedule which is flexible in order to enable him/her to meet the needs of clients, the school and families.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisory or administrative personnel.

Interpersonal Relationships/Personal Contacts: Patients, their family, referral professional and agencies, and all site personnel
Physical Demands: Must have satisfactory vision and hearing to adequately and efficiently perform the requirements of the position. Must have the agility and coordination to participate in group activities. Must be willing and able to assist in protecting patients from harming themselves and/or others in emergency situations.
